Raleigh, NC Kitchen Remodel: A Bright, Updated Kitchen Built Around the Existing Space

This Kitchen Remodel Raleigh NC project gave an outdated kitchen a brighter, cleaner, and more functional look while keeping the existing layout that already worked well for the homeowners.

For this Raleigh, NC kitchen remodel, the goal was to take an existing kitchen with good bones and give it a completely different look and feel. Instead of changing everything about the layout, we focused on the finishes, details, and features that would make the biggest impact.

The finished kitchen is brighter, cleaner, and more modern while still fitting naturally into the rest of the home.

From the refreshed cabinetry to the redesigned island, new countertops, backsplash, lighting, and hardware, each part of the project worked together to give the homeowners a kitchen that feels new without losing the character of the original space.

Kitchen Remodel Raleigh NC: Starting With the Existing Kitchen

Before the remodel, the kitchen had warm wood cabinetry, darker countertops, brown walls, and a raised countertop on the island.

The kitchen was functional, but the combination of darker finishes made the room feel heavier than it needed to.

The island was also a major part of the room. Because of its location between the kitchen and living area, changing its appearance would have an immediate effect on the entire space.

Rather than simply replacing one countertop with another, we used the island as one of the main design features of the remodel.

The original kitchen gives a good look at where this project started. Keeping the before photo in the article is important because you can really see how much the finishes changed the room.

Updating the Cabinets in This Raleigh Kitchen Remodel

One of the largest visual changes came from the cabinetry.

The existing wood cabinets were refinished in white, immediately brightening the kitchen. Going from the original wood tone to a clean white finish changed the way the entire room felt.

It also allowed some of the other details to stand out.

Black cabinet hardware was added to create contrast against the white doors and drawers. The darker hardware also connects visually with the appliances, faucet, pendant fixtures, and darker island.

Instead of everything blending together, the finished kitchen now has several layers of contrast while still keeping the overall design simple.

The preparation work is just as important as the finished coat. During this stage, the cabinets and surrounding areas were carefully protected while the new finish was applied.

Redesigning the Kitchen Island

The island became one of our favorite parts of this Raleigh kitchen remodel.

The original island had a raised bar-style countertop and a much more traditional appearance.

During the remodel, the island was modified and updated with custom trim work. Decorative panels were added along the sides, along with the large X-detail that now gives the island a much stronger custom appearance.

The existing raised island was rebuilt to create a larger, single-level workspace.

This photo is a good example of what homeowners normally do not see once a remodeling project is finished.

Before the countertop went on, we worked through the trim, electrical locations, support details, and finish work that would eventually turn the existing island into the centerpiece of the kitchen.

The island was then finished in a dark charcoal color.

That darker base works particularly well with the white cabinetry surrounding it. It gives the room contrast without making the kitchen feel dark again.

Moving From a Raised Bar to One Large Countertop

Another significant change was removing the raised portion of the original island.

The new design uses one large countertop surface instead.

That may seem like a small change on paper, but visually it makes a huge difference.

A single-level island creates a cleaner sightline through the kitchen. It also provides a large uninterrupted work surface that can be used for preparing meals, serving food, gathering around the kitchen, or simply spreading everything out when life gets busy.

Custom paneling and decorative details were added to transform the existing kitchen island.

The new island also incorporates the sink and a dark faucet, keeping the working area centrally located while allowing the new countertop to become one of the main visual features of the room.

New Countertops Brighten the Entire Kitchen

The new countertops were another major part of the transformation.

The light surface features subtle gray veining, giving the kitchen some movement without overwhelming the other finishes.

Because the surrounding cabinets are white, the countertop blends naturally into the overall design. Against the darker island, however, it creates a strong contrast.

That balance is one of the things that makes this kitchen work.

There are dark details throughout the room, but there are enough light surfaces to keep everything open and bright.

Existing cabinets were carefully prepared and refinished to create the new bright white kitchen.

This stage shows the kitchen beginning to come together. The countertops and painted cabinetry were in place, while the backsplash and lighting details were still being completed.

Adding a New Backsplash

The old darker backsplash was replaced with a much lighter tile.

The new backsplash helps reflect light around the countertops and creates a softer transition between the white cabinets and light countertop.

Instead of becoming the main feature of the room, the backsplash works quietly in the background.

That was the right approach here because the island, countertops, cabinetry, and lighting already provide plenty of visual interest.

A kitchen does not need every finish competing for attention.

Sometimes the best design decision is knowing where to keep things simple.

Lighting Makes a Difference

The remodel also included updated lighting above the island.

Three pendant lights now hang over the center workspace, while recessed lighting provides additional light throughout the kitchen.

Pendant lighting does more than illuminate an island.

Because the fixtures hang directly in the center of the room, they help visually define the island and give the kitchen another layer of detail.

The black fixtures also tie into the cabinet hardware, faucet, appliances, and dark island finish.

Once everything was installed, you could really see how all of those smaller choices came together.

Keeping the Existing Hardwood Floors

One thing we did not need to change was the hardwood flooring.

The existing floors already provided warmth and character, so keeping them allowed the remodel to retain an element of the original home.

They also work especially well with the new color palette.

White cabinetry and light countertops could easily make a kitchen feel too cool. The natural wood floor helps balance those finishes and gives the room warmth.

That is also an important part of remodeling.

Not everything needs to be replaced simply because a room is being updated. When an existing feature still works with the new design, incorporating it can make the finished space feel more natural.

The Finished Raleigh Kitchen Remodel

The completed kitchen feels noticeably larger and brighter even though the basic footprint of the room remained familiar.

The combination includes:

  • White refinished cabinetry
  • Black cabinet hardware
  • A dark charcoal custom island
  • Decorative island trim and X-panel details
  • A large single-level island countertop
  • Light countertops with subtle gray veining
  • New backsplash tile
  • Black kitchen faucet
  • Updated pendant lighting
  • Recessed lighting
  • Fresh wall colors
  • Existing hardwood flooring

Together, those changes transformed the kitchen without requiring the homeowners to completely reinvent the space.
